Fibers
The
development of textile industry in Serbia was followed by significant investments
in manufacturing of chemical fibers, both viscose and synthetic.
In
1953 in the town of Loznica the construction of one of the largest facilities
for manufacturing of viscose fibers in Europe started – the factory VISKOZA that was completed in 1958.
During
the period between 1960 and 1980 several companies for production
of synthetic fibers were founded, such as PROGRES in Prizren
(PES, PA), ZELE VELJKOVIC in Leskovac (PA), ITES in Odzaci (PP)
and DUNAV in Celarevo (PP).

During
the1980’s the production performance of this sector was at the
level of more than 45,000 tpy of rayon fibers and 12,000-15,000
tpy of synthetic fibers. At that time the company VISKOZA was
one of the biggest European exporters of viscose fibers.
At
the beginning of the 1990's this production sector drifted into
a crisis and its performance has declined continuously – the
present volume of production is at the level of about 15% of
achievements reached two decades ago. The company VISKOZA, already
in serious financial problems, did not restore its production
activities after the ending of NATO attacks. Financially supported
by the government, a production of viscose fibers was finally
restored in the second quarter of 2003.
